Week 1: Elements of Interior Design

WEEK 1: Point, Line, Form, and Plane

For the first week of learning about the theories and fundamentals of interior design, we discussed the very basics. These basics include the concepts of point, line, form, and plane. Each of these have their own importance and effect on interiors. I want to mention the elements that stuck out to me most.

To start with, "point" refers to the focal point or point of emphasis within a composition or a space. In interior spaces, we talked about different focal points that could be either statement furniture pieces or even an outdoor view/window. A focal point that I really appreciate and admire in any space is when there are vaulted ceilings or exposed wood in the ceiling that draws your attention upwards. I think this creates a very dramatic feeling and can make a space feel very open and inviting.

Another element of design I found to be interesting that we discussed this week is "line." There are many different ways you can apply it in a space. When we looked at Frank Lloyd Wright's Falling Water house and his use of horizontal lines, I realized the feeling that line can create depending on what you want to feel in your space. Horizontal lines really stuck out to me, as they create a sense of comfort and stability, which is a feeling I would love to create in my designs.

Vertical lines are also a very commonly used design element within interiors. They create a sense of drama and emphasis, making it feel large and tall. They open up a space and can create the illusion that a space is bigger than it is in reality.

We also discussed diagonal and curved lines, which both create their own feelings and mood within a space. Diagonal lines are very lively and active, and curved lines create a natural, calming feeling.

Overall, I learned and reviewed how different types of lines can change a space, along with different focal points and how they change your attention in a space.
