Week 2: Elements of Interior Design Part 2

In this second week of learning about the elements of design, we mainly discussed and observed how light, color, texture, and pattern all work together and how they affect each other.

"Light can be broken into the categories of ambient lighting (overall lighting), task lighting (defined purpose), accent lighting (emphasizing objects), and mood lighting (adding ambience)." I never knew about the different types of lighting and how purposeful and intentional each type of lighting can be. Ambient lighting was something that really stuck out to me because I always thought it referred to mood lighting, but it actually serves the purpose of lighting a space as a whole, overall. Here is an example of ambient lighting:

Another type of lighting that I loved learning about is mood lighting. This is very important to me as a future designer because I really want to create comfortable spaces where people can be functional or cozy depending on the lighting fixtures or even windows. I've always wanted to design a room with very warm lighting with lots of lamps and low-level fixtures. Here is a picture of inspiration for this concept:

Color was another part of this week that I really appreciated reviewing. I've previously known and learned about the color wheel and how different colors complement each other, along with how they can be tinted or shaded. Delving deeper into how color affects an interior space, though, was very helpful and taught me that "Colors and color temperature affect the mood of an interior and can have a psychological impact on observers." Color theory is also something that I would love to investigate more. I learned that color theory is based on how humans perceive color and their relationships with each other. Here is an example of a monochrome-colored living room with pops of yellow and some greenery:

I also learned for the first time how textures of materials and furniture can affect the color and lighting within a space. Our presentation tells us that "Texture makes a room feel smaller and more intimate. Textures can suggest temperature as well as alter the perception of space. A smooth texture reflects light and can look metallic, while a soft and raised texture absorbs light and suggests comfort." Now, when I go into a space, I want to pay more attention to the different materials used and how they absorb or reflect light and how it affects the colors and mood of the space. I think all of these elements can work together or contrast each other really well to create different emotions and vibes within an interior.

  2. MaKayla,
Your Blog entry was excellent. I had the feeling that you took away solid understanding of how these elements effect interior design. I loved your examples. We will spend 2 additional weeks on color theory. I find it fascinating too. 50/50 points
