Week 3: Balance, Unity, and Symmetry
This week, we discussed the principles of balance, unity, and symmetry within design. All three of these elements are very important to an interior space, and they should be taken into account when designing. Specifically, symmetry is a big part of this decision-making.
There are three different types of symmetry, which include the following: symmetrical (formal), asymmetrical (informal), and radial. Symmetrical symmetry is very simple and easy; you essentially have two sides that reflect each other almost identically. Radial symmetry is also fairly easy to accomplish with the use of a center point and having elements stretch out or work around that point. Asymmetry, on the other hand, is a bit harder to accomplish correctly due to its irregularity. Sometimes it is hard to maintain balance when trying to accomplish asymmetry. When it is done correctly, it tends to be the most interesting form of symmetry. Here are a few examples:
MaKayla,
ReplyDeleteThis entry was excellent! You provided us with a comprehensive summary of the principles of design we covered this week. I really appreciated your images of a balanced and unbalanced composition. I am giving you the tools to look at an interior that does not seem quite right and be able to understand what is wrong. 50/50 points
Makayla excellent explanation and pictures you show about symmetry.
